Chapter Fifteen

Nick

I spend a pleasant day on my own, something I haven’t done for a long time. Usually at home, even when I’m not working, one of the kids is calling in, or a friend stops by to see how I’m doing, which is lovely, don’t get me wrong. But for once it’s a treat to have some peace and quiet.

After leaving Elena outside her room, I go into mine, dress in comfortable track pants and a T-shirt, then go for a walk to give the staff time to clean and tidy the suite. I check out the ship’s library, discover a Nicholas Sparks book I haven’t read before, and take it to the Patisserie. I’m not a great breakfast person, but I’m getting peckish, so I order a Danish pastry and a latte, and eat and drink while I read.

It’s not long before my attention wanders, though, and I find myself looking out of the window at the waves, which are gold-topped in the morning sunshine. I feel as if I unzipped my fly this morning when I declared my feelings for Elena. I don’t know what I expected—some sign of pleasure or excitement from her, for sure. Instead, though, she merely looked uncertain and worried, although her cheeks did flush, and she did say thank you quietly before declaring it was time for her to get out of the hot pool and return to her room.

Should I have kept quiet? I don’t think Brock would have approved of that course of action. He’d have said to make my position clear. I suppose it makes sense that she’d be wary, considering how up-in-the-air Liz’s life is at the moment. Elena had her future planned out—she was convinced I had no feelings for her, and she was ready to move on. Now I’ve thrown it all into disarray. It’s no wonder she’s confused.

I close my eyes and think about the moment she came walking out in her new swimming costume. She’s tall and slender, and she’d tied her hair back, exposing the delicate, pale skin of her neck. As she slid into the water beside me, it had taken every ounce of willpower I possessed not to drag her into my arms and kiss her senseless.

It’s been over two years since I had sex. I’ve tried to train my mind not to think about it. But all of sudden it’s like I’m sixteen again, plagued with constant images of undressing a woman and discovering what she looks like without her clothes. Not just any woman, though. I’ve admired Elena for a long time, noting her shapely, slender legs, her elegant mannerisms, the interesting curve of the Cupid’s bow of her lips, but it seems that once I let go of the dog inside me that has been straining at his leash, there’s no holding him back. Now I can’t stop picturing her breasts, the curve of her waist, and how it would feel to slide inside her.

Jeez, Nick, get a grip.
